It's actually sort of amazing how much of an impact it has on people. Putnam is a typical shitlib and clearly did everything possible to deny what his data clearly shows.
duh, we lived around ppl who looked like us for 50,000 years or something then u brought niggas over and invaded all these shit places and look what happened cumskins

And I say that as a liberal who is deeply saddened by this....I just don't think we can responsibly ignore the impact that racial diversity has on society.

Yeah the problem is that all the pros of liberalism -- social safety net, workers' rights, resistance to corporate abuses, environmentalism, etc. -- only work in homogeneous societies where people actually give a fuck about each other. Otherwise you get the shit situation we're in now: the few middle/upper-middle class types who act in good faith get fucked, supporting the freeloading rich and poor for nothing in return.
It's no coincidence that so many people left and right alike subscribe to some sort of libertarian nonsense these days -- when it's every man for himself, what do you care if everyone else is a degenerate? No one feels like they have a stake in society as a whole, so they act accordingly.
Also keep in mind that corporations and bureaucrats benefit most from diversity (of race, not of thought, naturally). Atomized individuals are easy to rule and make great producer/consumer drones

the american identity is dead. the country is too large and too diverse for being "american" to mean anything anymore, and there's no external enemy (like the soviet union or whatever) to unify us. no one cares about the long-term prospects of the country as a whole anymore, everyone just wants to get theirs.

I think this is the most likely explanations. At our core we are just primates and programmed to respond positively to those we perceive as genetically close to us.

LMAO. the other day i was talking to a shitlib about America's changing demographics and the fact that whites would no longer be the majority and she was like, "I know, isn't that wonderful!"

If you buy the argument that social capital is a good thing (and Putnam certainly does, read his famous book on Northern Italy vs Southern Italy) then diversity is bad if it reduces social capital.

yeah, it's not people REACTING to diversity in ways that destroy social bonds and trust that's the culprit here. it's DIVERSITY ITSELF that's the culprit. BRILLIANT!
Date: February 24th, 2013 4:06 PM Author: amber stag film
Well, diversity is causing their reactions, that was what I was trying to say. Even if diversity is theoretically good in a world where people respond to it differently, it is very bad in the real world.

you're basically defending the racist who says: "Why should *I* have to change? It the REST of society that doesn't agree with me that should have to change. They're the ones at fault. Not me."
it isnt racist to not want to live around or be infiltrated by other races and cultures IMO. i am not making a judgment call on other races, i just dont want to be submerged by them
i want to propagate my own race and culture (white); having hordes of mexicans forced down my throat frustrates those goals. am i racist?

I think this is different because I don't believe that a lot this is caused by conscious decisions that people make. Diversity destroys social cohesion because people are naturally predisposed to dislike it, not because of racial animus. That said, I do think it would be silly to intentionally allow a lot of minorities to immigrate into a racist society and thereby destabilize it.

don't forget that the vast majority of americans are playing the part of the "racist" in your analogy. most people don't consider themselves racist, and yet exhibit subtle reactions to increased diversity that are strikingly racist in character. why?
Date: February 24th, 2013 4:38 PM Author: sticky white nursing home
the point is you can't stop people from reacting that way. we as a society just don't have that much collective control over the day-to-day experiences of people at a human level. wishing otherwise doesn't make it so.
"It's not that COMMUNISM ITSELF is an inherently shitty way of organizing society, it's THE WAY THAT PEOPLE REACT to Communism that MAKES IT SEEM shitty..."
"...uh, but if human nature guarantees that on a large scale people will always react poorly to a particular artificial system designed to organize human society, then doesn't that in fact mean that that system is actually an 'inherently shitty way' of doing that, for all practical intents and purposes?"
"No, there's nothing wrong with COMMUNISM ITSELF, it's just that PEOPLE...."

The thing about Putnam's thesis is that it's so fucking obvious. It's really incredible that we're not already murdering each other in America. A true credit to the extreme strength of American institutions I think.
If you picture almost any other society with lesser institutions, diversity inevitably leads to factionalism and sectarian conflict. It's laughable how easy it is to find examples of this, and yet American shitlibs still have a ridiculous and unquenchable diversity fetish. I think much of it is driven by living in a high IQ isolated bubble. 115+ IQ people of various races and cultures and backgrounds can live together in compact urban areas and in academic environments without hating or murdering each other, but the double digit folks that make up over half the population really can't.
Unless your diversity consists of a majority of Han Chinese, a significant minority of high IQ striver whites, and a working class consisting of low violence conservative cultured and preferably non-Muslim South and Southeast Asians, then it's probably going to be worse than the alternative with less diversity. So Singapore or bust.
America is worse and different than other places. Canada, UK, Australia has diversity but not as much racial tension. America has its history of racism, slavery, and segregation that pisses ppl off more, including for whatever weird reason white cumskins who are more IR8 about race issues than anyone else.
In other countries you have racial tension but not extreme paranoia over race and shit. The only other countries I've seen with American style race issues are South Africa and Brazil, both places history of racism/segregation/slavery
Have you been to Canadian cities? They have basically sold them to Chinks and PUnjabis. Point is race BS isn't just about total numbers of non-whites in a country, it's how ppl perceive others based on historical facts. America has so much shit history involving slavery, racism, segregation that is just creates this race class sociey where ppl are fucking paranoid abt each other's groups. That doesnt happen as much in the UK/CAnada

It's true. As a minority growing up here, around whites, it wasn't until I joined a firm where most of the people shared my race that i realized how much happier I was when my workplace was with people of similar background.

you also get lower rates of civic participation when people aren't as engaged with their communities, which leads to more corruption and absurdities like this:

To be fair,
Most racist white people still see you as a permanent foreigner in your home country. Oh well, better spew anti-black rants on the internet rather than being thoughtful about racism in America.

Even if this were true, there is nothing you can do about it. Deporting legal immigrants and citizens of minority races to the third world would do them more harm than any benefit they would reap from more homogenous societies.
Also cities are increasingly crowded and diverse yet continue to draw people of all ethnicities.

no great fan of diversity myself, but are you sure about the direction of the causation arrow. could not diversity be a symptom of a place where social conditions are so frenetic and anomie is high that trust is low: think of how everyone moves into new york.
ethnic homogeneity hasn't prevented social trust from being super-low (lower than USA as a whole) in black ghettos, sicily, syria, greece, or china. the low-trust parts of america are not going to turn high-trust in the short run if you deport all non-majority folks. i suggest fostering institutions and conditions which promote social trust, if social trust is what you want. oc if white nationalism is what you want you should be brave enough to say you prefer that for its own sake

CR. It's hilarious how this bort has developed such a thorough and complex critique of GC since this thread happened, but somehow that all vanishes when contemplating diversity as a completely distinct societal construct. The key moment when U.S. society became vastly more inclusive and diverse was post-WW2, as 300+ years of WASP dominance gave way to Catholics and Jews being tolerated. Not coincidentally this was when economic security for the masses was at its peak, and when several other massive social changes weren't also pursued in parallel (i.e we were still a masculinist, church-going, hetero and cis-centric society). It's no coincidence that we're backsliding post-ITE when we've simultaneously swallowed a huge economic turd and flung the doors open for gays and trannies to gain full equality. But if we do eventually get to a place where the social safety net is strong enough to have the basic economic needs of the population met it will correlate with a much more peaceful racial dynamic. And the feminism/gender wars during the 70s-present similarly somehow drops out of consideration. We doubled the workforce, hugely undermined the basic economic structure of family units and pitted all straight people against each other in a multi-generational re-negotiation of all domestic labor. That much change being forced on everyone at the same time is completely crazy. The fact that we still have the greatest economy and military in the world is a huge credit to our institutions and the elites who run them. It hasn't been perfect by any means, and there's a ton of room for improvement. But we went from "only straight WASP men need apply" to "let's debate whether a 7 year tranny should have special rights at school" in the span of two generations.
