Bygone era. They don't make em like they used to. What I'm alluding to is they came up in an era where people cared about writing QUALITY BRIDGES. There's some phenomenally composed liaisons 3/4ths of the way through most of their songs that go kinda outside the box and then back into the box (giggity) that sets up the final chorus in such an artful and talented way that you just don't see anymore in modern music. You really have to respect a guy who can write excellent transitions. It's not even practised [sic] anymore. Like there just aren't bridges in songs now. You can't even find one. They're just... gone.
In the late 2000s the "vamp" took over where 95% of pop songs just decided to have one hook that repeats forever without risking taking the listener's ear to a place it didn't want to go. I blame rap music (see Jay-Z - Dirt Off Your Shoulder, Dr. Dre - Still D.R.E.) for popularizing the vamp and creating a generation of lazy songwriters with no Aristry. We have to go back to genuine Art Projects where people care about Art and Artistry.

Corgan is really good at manipulating expectation. He is good at establishing a new emotional perspective before returning to a familiar idea and he can make a final chorus feel substantially different even though it is compositionally the same as the earlier chorus. It's a different kind of artistry.
Disagree with you about no bridges anymore. Reckoner by radiohead and seventeen by sharon von etten both have fire ass bridges. Also I love you by fontaines dc.

Reckoner was 2007 dude lol.
Also if you listen with headphones around 2:29 you can hear the metronome in Thom's headphones clicking into the vocal mic not flame. Try this at home kids.

Yeah good point, I guess they are pretty rare now as of 2026. But I'm not even listening to new music at this point. I gave up on rock music completely like around 2021.
