In 2027, with 56 Dem senators, they cut a deal for impeachment and conviction + ban on blormpf running again:
- end Iran war
- continue Ukraine war
- Medicare for most + expanded rural healthcare
- stricter controls against Chinese meth and opioids
- all Trump cabinet members gone with no Vance pardons to them or any Trump family
- beginning process to amend Constitution to ban stock trading by federal electeds and officials + rein in pardon power a bit + SCOTUS term limits of some kind
Get a combination of mega olds like Grassley, women like Murkowski, and ultra safe bros who couldn't be primaried by vengeful blormpf (maybe Dems even have side deal to not go hard against those bros next time even if Trump pwns them ... Focus on people who aren't running for another 4 or 6 years).
I bet you could get a dozen, and if writing was on the wall, many more would find it in their political interest to join so their next opponent can't say they are Trump stooges.
Vance's motivation is obviously to be POTUS and clear the field for his 2028 run.

Wouldn’t the dems rather just let Trump continue to sink the Republican Party to new lows in popularity and then take over full control in 2028? Why prop up Vance?

Vance is young, with young children and a careerist brown wife. I could see him wanting lib acceptance like GWB got eventually. A Gerald Ford style unity and healing thing could appeal to him.
Even the safest of safe GOP senators would be risking their careers. Right now there's zero chance that e.g. the Idaho bros lose re-election (Crapo in 28, Risch in 32). But if Trump and AIPAC made it their mission to take them out, they would have to be pretty goddamn worried. (Risch will be 89 when his term ends so maybe he's in the mega old category but you never know with these freaks. Probably likes blormpf anyway)
