it's mindblowing when you look up these also-ran bands from 30+ years ago on Youtube and find that they have been playing 300 shows per year for years.
I guess bands just 'tour' infinitely now that there is effectively no record industry.

touring can be a brutal grind.
i always found the image of the reclusive 'Howard Hughes' rockstar living off his ASCAP royalties in a secluded mansion more alluring than 'touring the Midwest on a Greyhound bus at age 49'.
the 60s/70s decadent 'Brian Wilson'/Lennon in the Dakota lifestyle.

I find the tour incomes for older acts sort of incredible.
Blink 182 made $150 mm in their last tour. Meanwhile New Found Glory and Modest Mouse are competing with cover bands to fill up a House of Blues and probably make $10,000.
98 Degrees and OTown probably can't make a main stage at a state fair, but Backstreet Boys are making $5 mm a night at the Sphere.
Just being that one tier below the huge acts mean you make like 1/100th when you're touring in your 40s and 50s.
