(CNN) – For high school salutatorian Ryan Durosky, there was no question that he would go to his dream school, New York University. It's a name-brand school, but it cost him. Now, he's nearly $300,000 in debt, and he's not alone.

lol @ this comment: "Its not just young people with student debts. I am 52 and just finished law school. I owe over $200,000 and with interest adding daily, I will never be able to pay it off in my lifetime. I live and work in a small town and circumstances have changed here since I entered law school. None of the law firms are hiring new lawyers. I had to open my own office just to work."

Whats the big deal? The most they can take is 15% of your income above the poverty line. If you get a prestigious degree, you should be able to get a job that that pays enough to let you have a comfortable lifestyle even with this limitaiton.

"Section 220 of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (BAPCPA), P.L. 109-8, extended similar protections to "qualified education loans" starting on October 17, 2005, even when they are not funded or guaranteed by a nonprofit organization. Qualified education loans is defined to include any debt incurred by the taxpayer solely for the purpose of paying for qualified higher education expenses of the taxpayer, the taxpayer's spouse, or any dependent of the taxpayer. (Dependency is determined as of the time the taxpayer took out the loan.) Interestingly enough, most private student loan programs seem to have some sort of nonprofit involvement."

This guy and many others like him got fucked by Obama's HCR bill- the new IBR limits it to 10% and shortens the repayment period to 20 years, but only for loans after 2014.

One of the biggest scams ever. There is absolutely no reason to wait until 2014 to enact the provisions. It could be done next week if the DOE wanted to.

This is why I told the NYU Stern Admission Dean that his institution was crap in comparison to Northwestern when they called about my acceptance, because NYU is a money-grubbing, overrated university.

THIS LED HIM TO BELIEVE THAT HE WAS TOO GOOD FOR THE STATE SCHOOL FULL SCHOLARSHIP HE WAS OFFERED, THAT HE WAS DESTINED FOR GREAT THINGS

He's paid down $12K in two years, so he's forking over $500 a month, so if he's got all his loans on IBR, he's probably making around $45k. Of course, some of his loans are probably private, so he's probably making closer to 35k.
One kid at my HS went to Hampshire college in MA (no grades are given, and he ended up skipping most of his classes anyways), I presume this was out of state tuition, then decided to go to NYLS, again, paying full sticker I presume.

lol@the idea of a "dream college." school is a means to an end, not a vacation (hi bluesmoke). way to turn down a full ride for one of the most expensive schools in the country (with probably the worst fin aid of any comparable private school) in *the* most expensive city in the US. hope your four years in manfuckinghattan were worth it bro, because you probably wont be able to afford living there for a long time. if you cant comprehend what 275k is when you're 18, YOUR FUCKED.

Sr associates at big consulting firms don't make enough money to justify attending the schools. SR associates at most banking/consulting firms really don't make as much money as everyone thinks.
Do some research on gd or read that book about Lazards or the collapse of Lehman to see how pay is structured. I've got buddies who were in pretty nice positions at big hedge funds (making about 175k a year), got laid off and are now workign as VP's at big banks.. They have ugly wives, live in shitty apartments, are super nerds, smell like curry and make about 200k a year. 200k gross is just 120k a year. I really don't see the glamor in being a 'banker'.
Cherish life, don't do shit you hate. Most of the Indian nerds you meet are pretty good at what they do though. Switching fields to law, it's amazing how many people want to be big law partners. I'm almost positive that 99.95 % of you haven't seen big law partners literally suck dick to get clients. It's absurd to see it in person. They really are high end prostitutes except high-end whores charge more (3-4k an hour )
I've worked with several associates at the 'prestigious' firms (not the Accenture/PWC BS. High end shops) complain about their student loans and how they want the wives to become dentists/become CFA's to help pay bills. Northwestern undergrad, HBS, vacations every year while in undergrad, etc..
If I were a hiring partner at a firm and I was sorting through the potentials I'd look at two things. Do you have a book/connections you can bring into the firm, do you fit into either the rain making group or will you be a cog that will crank out the hours and do as your told.

MORONSPWNED. I have ZERO sympathy for people with loans. Either have such great #'s and extracurriculars that you get a scholarship or go to a school you can afford. If you choose to leverage your future in search of "prestige" then LOL @ you 6 figures of debt and dead end life.

At the age when I was choosing colleges I easily could have made this mistake and I was only lucky I didn't (chose a public for reasons having little to do with money). I mean I was barely 17.
By the time I did law school I knew well enough to take the full ride though.

How did he rack up that much debt during ugrad? Isn't NYU tuition like $20k? If you live like a reasonable student you can easily get by on <$20k in non-tuition expenses.
But 275k of debt is like $69K a year. Can anyone explain? Am I missing something?
