Goal is to work in SF but will settle for LA. Got 1/3 $ at USC, might get some money from Duke. Summer start at Duke, two weeks from now. Have to scramble and relocate from LA if I take Duke, GF is upset about it, doesn't want to relo.

why would you want to be away from your gf for 3 yrs? It's 3 yrs of the best years of your life. It's not like USC is Southwestern or something, you'll do fine getting a CA job.
EDIT: in the interest of full disclosure, I am going to USC

Dude, go to USC. If you fuck up majorly there (which I doubt, because you got into Duke)you'll make 90k, but at least you'll enjoy 3 years of your youth in LA with a happy girlfriend--and you won't have to rush marriage. Durham is not for everyone.

I know. But the preftige. I'm such a whore.
Yeah, I guess USC is pretty fucking great for Cali biglaw. She has an awesome job that pays a ton of money and a nice little apartment, I got my car, USC gave me a scholarship...etc.
But the preftige. Man, this is tough...
EDIT: My parents went through a nasty divorce and I promised myself I'd never rush to get married...it's crazy that I'm considering it. Arrghh...

Duke is not Harvard. Remember that. Duke is more prestigious than USC, hands down, but I don't see much else that would compel you to go there over USC. USC is prestigious as all hell for LA jobs, and still very decent for SF jobs (you will pwn Davis, Hastings and Santa Clara associates).

i think you'd have better options in SF from duke. that being said, sounds like you should stay in LA. or, just dump the fucking girl and go to DUke. if she can't support your decision on a law school, she isn't marriage material anyways.

Don't listen to this stitty East coast mentality approach to your gf. It's a requirement for east coasters because girls out there suck and are ambitious money-craving whores.
If you'd settle for practicing in LA, then USC is better than Duke. For SF, Duke gets the nod.
That said, try to convince your gf to head out to NC with you. IMO the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill triangle area is the best place to live/most similar to West coast environment outside of the West coast itself (except that tobacco is king and you'll have to ask for the non-smoking section in restaurants...very retro.)

Duke Owns USC even in LA. Trust me. Duke gets offers from LA but rejects them because Duke students go to DC or NYC.
USC is a TTT. USC can't say shit to UCLA and will suck their dick throughout their lives. Why? Because every fucking USC student got rejected from UCLA that is why. Why else would any moron want to go to USC?
Trust me. Go to Duke and invite your g/f over. The housing is dirt cheap and you can fuck your g/f while going to a half-decent school. USC is like a shit hole for reals.

unfortunately, you are wrong. if you will try to argue that LA firms will go as deep into USC's class as they will into dook's, then you are just a retard.

You are just jealous because you didn't get into t14 law school. WHere do you go? Cooley? Loyola? Hastings? USC is a piece of shit and Duke will own USC even in LA.
Only reason why there are more USC alums in LA is because Duke alums don't want to work in LA. They want NYC, DC, SF or any other real law cities.
Duke students that DO apply to law firms get tons of acceptances. It is just that they don't go.
You are indeed a TTT. BTW, which school do you go to?

1. you need to get the lowdown on exactly how deep into the class at USC can get SF biglaw. If its not 50%, you will have far greater luck at Duke.
2. USC is a great school, by the way, and you'll get just as good an education there as at Duke probably.
3. You'll also be in LA, which, if you like LA, would mean your three years of law school will be far more enjoyable than at Duke.
4. Plus you won't have to deal with a) breaking up with your girlfriend; b) owing her for moving out to NC w/you; c) being in a long distance relationship; d) rushing into marriage. At least not because of the law school decision.
The bottom line I suspect is that your job prospects from Duke are better, but that advantage is dampened comparatively to other non-t14 schools because USC is in LA.
Good luck though - I don't know that you can really go wrong if you make a careful considerate decision.
