A similar dynamic holds when you consider physicalism. Because the physical universe is determined via observations, the limit of physicalism is that there must be some "smallest observer" that cannot observe itself. Say the observer converts himself into a mirror of sorts, after converting the rest of the physical universe into a mirror - then, by definition, there is no more physical universe, or no more observer.

But where did the observer flee to? Well, perhaps it makes sense to say it fled to some other "plane" - leaving physical "stuff" below it. but then, having the nature of a perfect mirror, it would again cline toward doing the same thing but in reverse.

This is the typical problem of science. Scientists tend to be pretty shitty at thought experiments, because they cling to a religious pseudobelief in an unmoved mover. So we get some purchase from a scientific theory - say, thermodynamics - but when you point out that the theory is flawed due to infinite regress, people get butthurt and start going all pharisee on you.
