In this thread, let's collect the little things you've learned that make life better. No broad advice like "don't go to law school" or "avoid debt", but more along the lines of "take fiber daily" or "eat a banana or drink a gatorade after a long night of drinking".

If you're not a morning person, get the BLOOD FLOWING as soon as possible after getting out of bed. This could mean walking your puppyd00d, going for a bike ride, or doing pushups until you drop. Just get that shit flowing at all costs.

When you move into a new place, make your bed up first thing. That way, when you get really tired later on from doing all the moving stuff, you can stop anytime and your bed is all ready for you, clean & cozy, and you won't have to make it up when you're dog-tired nor contemplate sleeping on a gross mattress b/c you don't want to bother finding your bedding.

yeah, brother. This has been crucial to my prevailing over aspieness. If you just do shit on the reg, people will associate you with being a chill alpha bro who is down to cut loose and start inviting you on lots of trips and stuff.

This is definitely good advice. Protip: you have NO GOOD REASON to turn down an invite unless you actively dislike the inviters or you have already been invited to something else.
when washing undershirts, before putting them in the dryer do a quick snap/unfurl of each shirt (i.e. grab at the shoulder portion with both hands and snap your wrists up and down in front of you -- what the fuck is that motion called anyway?) before putting it in the dryer. this will loosen out the cotton, which has just gotten all wrung up in the wash. the end result is undershirts which are soft and wrinkle free after you take them out of the dryer.
Give serious credence to the advice of smart older people you respect who do not have a direct interest in your life. Like a 50-year-old dude in a bar giving you advice is usually credited advice if you think he is credited.

for dudes: put in minimal skin care maintenance. moisturize with something decent that has sunblock in the morning, drink a lot of water, don't eat shit pure shit diets with 10X the sodium you need, take fish oil on the reg, etc.
most professional dudes have terrible looking skin and doing all that shit can make you look several years younger and much healthier, if you're consistent, and none of it is hard/expensive/time-consuming.

depends, but generally just what you said. go a lot, be cool with the staff, bring cool people in, spend a lot of money there and tip everyone generously, in cash. they will start treating you like a VIP amazingly quickly. but then don't act like you own the place, just enjoy getting drinks faster, being able to hang out past last call with friends, free food, discounted tabs, etc.
Super credited. There's one bartender in particular who will message me and let me know what she thinks of my dates. If my date is rude to the bartender (who looks like a suicide girl) it's an auto-ding.
Also, the chef's will send out new food and get your comments. The trick to getting to this level is to explain one time why you don't like something on the menu, there's always something that sucks and they generally know it, so it establishes you.

they wouldn't be asking for feedback if they knew it was 180. they wouldn't be sending it to random customers if they thought it sucked. they want feedback to fine tune.
Yeah, that was exactly my point. When you're on a date and the chef sends out an app for you to try and then comes and gets your feedback you looking so money in front of your/date/coworkers/whoever.

don't constantly snack. it's perfectly natural and healthy to be hungry. you can work, concentrate, and get around just fine if you're hungry. you're not dizzy, weak, or irritable because you haven't eaten in five hours - you feel that way because you're weak and addicted to cramming food in your mouth the second you decide it seems like a good idea.
Date: May 15th, 2011 6:53 PM Author: Odious Coral Stead Jew
wtf this is bad advice. If you're snacking on something healthy like peanuts and fruit throughout the day and combine that with smaller meals that's a credited combo. You should never feel weak or dizzy.
Date: May 15th, 2011 7:02 PM Author: copper cruise ship
also: this snacking on peanuts bullshit is flame. they're pretty fattening. the worst mistake a fat can make is to buy a big ass can of cashews at costco for example - they'll eat 4000 calories of nuts in 3 days.
Date: May 15th, 2011 7:04 PM Author: Wonderful pink home
all nuts are if eaten in excess - high caloric density. snacking all the time is one of the easiest ways to rack up calories without thinking about it. if you want a "snack," eat a handful, one handful, then leave it alone. your apparently insurmountable hunger will go away and you don't need more than that.
Date: May 15th, 2011 7:08 PM Author: copper cruise ship
hey man i'm on your side, man up and be hungry for a while before you jam a handful of nuts in there. the problem with what you're saying is people have ZERO self control and all food comes in huge quantities in this country. better to leave it alone, especially w/r/t this healthy nut snacking flame.

mindlessly snacking is dumb, brother. eat solid, healthy meals. eating out of boredom or the slightest tinge of hunger is a chick's habit and why so many people are TTT fats, despite thinking they eat well.
no normally nourished person gets tired, dizzy, or otherwise fucked up from being a little hungry - you can operate for days on an empty stomach. my point is that people imagine those symptoms because they're little bitches and can't handle a little hunger.

Aspieness gets poked fun at on XOXO, but it can seriously fuck you over IRL. Unless you're some tech entrpreneur genius or a top rated HYP grad you simply will not go too far with too many aspie quirks.
Learn how to read people. Know what makes them tick, what motivates them, how they operate, understand the political heiarchy. Standoffish aspies have a serious tendencies to piss others off with their habits. No one gives a shit that you knew how to perform PDEs in UG or read some obscure french author from the 17th century

Most people will never ever care about your accomplishments, do don't talk much or brag about them. Do the exact opposite of what your typical DC striver does.
Aspies just like the blanket rule "don't talk about yourself and your accomplishments" because they don't have the social ability to figure out when the actual, more nuanced rule applies.
Don't buy a new car every two years. Keep it well maintained and clean. No one will know the difference between a car that is 2 years old and one that is 5 or 6. And don't brag about your car. One of my subordinates is a weight lifter and former semi-pro rugby player. He has massive paws and a crushing handshake that lasts too long. It takes all of my will power to not fuck this guy over out of spite.
Adrian Peterson has the strongest handshake in the NFL. Shook Jared Allen's hand for the first time and he thought Peterson was fucking with him. Said he was going to take him outside and kick his ass.

Maybe. Failure at this is probably corollated with failure at life. But I've taught girlfriends at ~25 to do this, so I'd think an aspie dude could figure it out at that age too.
erring on the side of too firm is better than the opposite though. a crushing handshake is only momentarily annoying. a limp, clammy handshake is awkward as fuck and creates a seriously bad first impression.
Date: May 15th, 2011 7:23 PM Author: aphrodisiac space trump supporter
Right. But there's a fairly large spectrum between too weak and too strong. Between lifting and rock climbing, I have very strong hands, but I would still have to intentionally crush someone's hand to err on the too-strong side.
agreed, and you should aim to be in that spectrum, but if somebody still has to actually consciously think about this as a 21+ year old man they should try to go on the firm side. its unlikely it will be too crushing, but even if it is, much better than the floppy dead fish handshake.

learn how to carry the weight of a conversation with an awkward person - know how to make it easier for them and do that. if this sounds impossible to you, it's because you're awkward and you need to really work on your shit.
note for aspies: this does not mean standing there and droning on while the other person stairs blankly. a conversation is an exchange between two people and you're supposed to facilitate it, not turn it into a lecture.

Corollary: Be an active listener. Ask questions (without seeming like you're "asking questions"), listen actively while making eye contact. Nod naturally, but don't say "ok" or "sure" or whatever, because that just makes it sound like you're waiting for the person to finish talking. This is not natural for most people, but it will make you much, much more likable.

learn about at least one or two areas of culture or art, and have an actual interest in it.
you don't need to be able to entertain a room full of professors with an impromptu lecture on voltaire's later period letters, but if all you can discuss with some articulation and depth is sports, video games, movies, whatever shitty genre of popular music you like, and youtube videos, people are are going to rightly assume that you're a boring mouth-breather who lost most of your intellectual curiosity senior year of high school.

1. If you have delayed sleep phase syndrome (where you naturally stay up until 4am and sleep until noon-ish), take melatonin and get off the laptop at bedtime. Read instead. The lighting of the laptop somehow screws with your natural ability to sleep. I can't tell you how much better my life is now that I no longer have the constant stress of wondering whether I'd be able to to sleep that night. It also helped me break an ambien addiction.
2. Especially if you're not Asian, experiment with a low-carb diet even if you're not dieting. Don't do something psychotic like Atkins, but count your carbs for a couple days and try to keep it between 60-100 grams/day. I've done it for five years and will never go back. You feel better (less bloated), look better, and sleep better.
3. If you have trouble eating too much -- or just really really like to eat a lot of food when you eat -- try skipping breakfast. Too many people eat breakfast because they think they should in order to "rev up their metabolism" (nonsense) or because otherwise they'll lose muscle mass (nonsense). Even when I'm not dieting, I never eat until about five to seven hours after I wake up just so that when I eat I can eat like a fucking pig. 1. Listen to people. People will like you if you allow them to talk about themselves and make them feel important. If you approach a conversation trying to win someone over by making yourself look important you'll succeed maybe 30-40% of the time. But if you try to win someone over by making THEM feel important, you'll succeed nearly 100% of the time.
2. Moisturize every day with a moisturizer that has at least SPF 15. Consume a lot of omega-3 and drink a lot of water. If you're in the sun all day, put on at least SPF 30. This will help slow down aging.
3. Exercise regularly, preferably in the morning before you go to work. This helps jump-start your day like no other. Adopt a more exercise-heavy and health conscious lifestyle.
4. Learn to cook at least 2 or 3 meals that you'd feel comfortable serving to someone else.
5. Don't get too butthurt and take it too personally if someone dumps you/rejects you because you're ultimately not their type. People are after all sorts of different things so unless you're completely on the ass end of the bell curve in terms of looks and personality you'll find someone who sees you as their type.
6. Pay off all your bills on time, especially your credit card bills.
7. Live overseas for at least a few months of your life and make the effort to interact with people other than Americans. If anything it'll make you appreciate what we have in America more.
8. There are certain aspects of life which should be approached as competitions and other aspects of life which should not be. Learn to differentiate the two, and if you find yourself in the former situation realize that your "fiercest" competitors can turn out to be your closest friends and best allies, especially when the competition is done. A true competitor in a healthy competition pushes you to be your best and brings out the best in you. This is what you should care about, not winning or losing.

3. When shaving, don't forget to get the part just below the nose. It's easy to miss and looks terrible when you do.
4. Don't wear t-shirts that lots of other people have (unless it's for an athletic team)
5. If you have any kind of skin problems, make sure all your soaps and washes are labeled as oil and fragrance free
6. Get a Twitter account, but don't share it with your friends. Follow all of the news and media outlets and public figures you like, but don't follow anyone who posts more than 5-10 times a day on average. Read your Twitter feed on your Smartphone while doing things like taking a shit. Retweet all posts containing articles you want to read later.
7. If you're looking for a job, have a "professional" Twitter account where you post articles directly related to your field once every few days. Put it on your resume. This helps set you apart, and in a good way far often than in a bad way.
8. Use Google Voice as your primary means of telecommunication

Pick a quirky hobby and get really fucking good at it. Something like darts, bowling, juggling, magic, etc. It is an awesome icebreaker and rewarding when someone acknowledges your persistence. Mine is foosball. I picked it up in college, bought a table, practiced like hell, and started playing on the pro tour a few years later (srsly, google it). It seems dorky as shit, but when I'm at a house/bar/party with a foosball table I play for drinks and always get subtle looks of amazement that say "HTF did someone get that good at a foosball". Comfort is the most important thing in the world. And its sad there is not enough comfort out there. I never understood why everything has to be so professional and square, for lack of a better word. I am sure there are reasons for it, but I wonder what it would be like if everyone was more friendly, caring, and understanding, and focused more on comfort. For example, I remember being in the grocery store or something and I said how can the cashiers stand there all day? Why can't they just have chairs? My girlfriend said it wouldn't be professional, or something like that. I dunno...I just don't see what is so wrong with making things more comfortable.
