ok, second favorite.
effective march 1, we will raise first year salary to $145k. we'll make adjustments to other years also, but we have not yet figured out what they will be.
thanks for all the hard work that is going on across the firm.

I actually considered doing this as a prank before, but I'm too lazy. If I had, I would have gone higher that 145K. It's not that surprising - Quinn is obviously trying to make a name for itself as a compensation leader. They also have a growing NY office (i think almost 70 now), so they were going to have to match the 145K for that office anyway. It's smart - I think they're all going to go to 145K (b/c firms like Gibson have policies on equal pay among offices), so why not be one of the first.

point taken. i just think most firms view it as bad business to have unequal pay between offices (although it's acceptable if they hide it in bonuses).

To be honest, this is the version I was forwarded, and this is why I wondered if it was a prank:

It'd be the first informal email regarding raises I've seen. Pretty cool if the firm is that laid back, but kinda doubt it. I mean, it might as well read:
"Whats up. We're raisin' first year salaries in NY...not sure about the other years. Late."

Yeah, I was thinking it would fit the image. On the other hand, I think people would still want some sense of formality when it came to things like salary announcements.
I would think they would just want salary announcements. I mean, have you ever heard the complaint "I didn't like the managing partner's tone when he gave me a raise."

Even when I've worked in informal and casual environments, I think it's good if the administrative stuff was formal in terms of policy and procedures. Makes it seem a little more reliable and predictable.

Subject: Salaries
Salutations ladies and gentlemen. I would like to congratulate you on the spectacular work you have been doing. The Compensation Committee and I have met and we have decided to raise first year salaries to $145,000 for first years. The figures for other years will be adjusted as well.
I would also like to remind you that only Fridays are designated as casual days in the office. Some of the partners have reported seeing non-pleated slacks on other days of the week. Please refer to the employee manual on the firm dress code.
