Or is there some new business model in amassing X million users and selling quickly to either Google, Apple, or Facebook?

this has been happening for years over there

it's like the housing bubble -- all built on one big flawed assumption. in that case, assumption was that housing would keep rising in value. in this case, assumption is that *someone* will figure out how to monetize all this stuff. they wont.

Yeah, Google has really struggled to monetize its traffic, so I guess it's logical to assume that there is no such thing as an internet business.

Not saying Facebook will work in the long run, but there's a clear precedent for

1. Get traffic.

2. Sell ads.

3. Profit.

I think it's a defensive acquisition -- Facebook wants to pre-empt a migration toward the likes of Instagram in the realm of social photo sharing, and it wants to acquire technologies it can expan/develop upon. I suppose it also wants to show investors it has a constructive (even potentialy accretive) use for the IPO dough.

It would make sense then if Instagram only permitted photo sharing on the Facebook sphere. But according to the news report, Instagram is still going to have full G+, Twitter, Flikr, etc. integration

But again, I don't understand how they come up with a $1 billion valuation for a company with no revenue. That's $34 for each user on Instagram right now.

Facebook will still be ale to claim the traffic originated on its site for eCPM & traffic aggregation purposes. It will also defensively own any related patents/technologies and pre-empt any loss of social dominance, if only on picture sharing

they came up with a 1 billion valuation because their competition is google and they needed to shell out a shitload of money

also, I'd expect to see instagram features which integrate more tightly with facebook than other services in the future, as well as direct tie-ins to facebook photo albums

it's (secondarily, of course) also a market-signaling device --i.e.-- we understand this to be worth a lot of money, and you should, too -- in the future, you should value social photo sharing highly and give us rich click-through values and eCPMs. they wanted to capture the "value" in a way their own social pic sharing hadn't yet.

These guys are drowning in pussy. You: Basement.

Kevin Systrom (CEO)

Kevin graduated from Stanford University in 2006 with a BS in Management Science & Engineering—he got his first taste of the startup world when he was an intern at Odeo that later became Twitter. He spent two years at Google—the first of which was working on Gmail, Google Reader, and other products and the latter where he worked on the Corporate Development team. Kevin has always had a passion for social products that enable people to communicate more easily, and combined with his passion for photography Instagram is a natural fit.

Mike Krieger

Mike also graduated from Stanford University where he studied Symbolic Systems with a focus in Human-Computer Interaction. During his undergrad, he interned at Microsoft's PowerPoint team as a PM and at Foxmarks (now Xmarks) as a software developer. He wrote his Master's thesis on how user interfaces can better support collaboration on a large scale. After graduating, he worked at Meebo for a year and a half as a user experience designer and as a front-end engineer before joining the Instagram team doing design & development.

Of the tens of thousands of businesses that grew out of the App bubble, Square is one of the few that a) Adds long term economic value and b) Had a clearly defined business model & growth strategy from day 1. Like you said, it solves real problems.

But it's bullshit like Instagram that gets all the attention.
