Winston could never be sure whether Bob Dell was a real person or whether he was simply a creation of the ABA to channel the rage of debt-laden law grads.

The voice from the laptop was still pouring forth its tale of negligence and duty of care, but the shouting outside had died down a little. The students were turning back to their work. One of them approached with the BARBRI outlines. Winston, sitting in a blissful dream, paid no attention. He was not working unpaid state government any longer. He was back in the classroom, with everything forgiven, his soul white as snow. He was in the dean's office, confessing everything, implicating everybody. He was walking down the white-marble corridor, with the feeling of walking in sunlight, and a human resources rep at his back. The longhoped-for V10 callback was just beginning.
He gazed up at the enormous face. Three years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the pasty white skin that had not seen sunlight for weeks. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved law school.

If there was hope, it must lie in the TTTs. Winston could see it in their eyes. He saw could see it in the face of a Seton Hall 3L struggling to get an unpaid shitlaw internship, or a Loyola student trying to convince an interviewer to talk to him more than five minutes. They were free from the start. They were free because they were never seduced by dreams of models and bottles or even comped lunches. They were free because they had never strived.

"My sight is failing," jewdood said finally. "Even when I was young I could not have read what was written there. But it appears to me that that wall looks different. Are the Seven Commandments the same as they used to be, Spackler?"
For once Spackler consented to break his rule, and he read out to her what was written on the wall. There was nothing there now except a single Commandment. It ran:
ALL DOODS ARE EQUAL BUT BOOMERS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS

They were sitting side by side on the carpeted floor. He pulled her closer against him. Her head rested on his shoulder, the pleasant smell of her hair conquering the staleness of the library. She was very young, he thought, she still expected something from life, she did not understand that to ask a jobless 3L about his job search solves nothing.
'Actually it would have made no difference,' he said.
'Then why are you sorry you didn't do it?'
'Only because I prefer a positive to a negative. In this game that we're playing, we can't win. Some kinds of failure are better than other kinds, that's all.'
He felt her shoulders give a wriggle of dissent. She always contradicted him when he said anything of this kind. She would not accept it as a law of nature that the bottom 1/3 is always defeated. In a way she realized that she herself was doomed, that sooner or later ITE would catch her and pwn her, but with another part of her mind she believed that it was somehow possible to inhabit a secret world in which you could poast as you chose. All you needed was luck and cunning and boldness and an internet connection. She did not understand that there was no such thing as happiness, that an upper-middle-class lifestyle lay only in the far future, long after you were destroyed, that from the moment of declaring war on your lot in life it was better to think of yourself as a corpse.

Winston could not definitely remember a time when his country had not been in ITE, but it was evident that there had been a fairly long interval of prosperity during his childhood, because one of his early memories was of a layoff, which appeared to take everyone by surprise. Perhaps it was the time when the Russian currency crisis had fallen on the Dow. He did not remember the fall itself.

The primary aim of modern lawschool (in accordance with the principles of doublethink, this aim is simultaneously recognized and not recognized by the directing brains of the Boomer Party) is to use up the loan capacity of the students without raising their general standard of living.

He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself. He wrote:
Lathaming does not entail Dell: lathaming IS Dell.

"I betrayed you," she said baldly.
"I betrayed you," he said.
She gave him another quick look of dislike.
"Sometimes," she said, "they threaten you with something you can't stand up to, can't even think about. And then you say, ‘Don't do it to me, do it to somebody else, do it to So-and-so.’ And perhaps you might pretend, afterwards, that it was only a trick and that you just said it to make them stop and didn't really mean it. But that isn't true. At the time when it happens you do mean it. You think there's no other way of saving yourself, and you're quite ready to save yourself that way. You want it to happen to the other person. You don't give a damn what they suffer. All you care about is yourself."
"All you care about is yourself," he echoed.
"And after that, you don't feel the same towards the other person any longer."

People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the letterhead, every record of everything you had ever billed was wiped out, and your one-time business card was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated: lathamed was the usual word.

In the walls of Winston's cubicle there were was an orifice. A large oblong slit protected by a wire grating within easy reach of his arm. This slit was called a "memory hole" and was for the disposal of OCI statistics, job reports, and faculty salaries. Similar slits existed in thousands or tens of thousands throughout the law school, not only in every office but at short intervals in every hall and classroom. When one knew that any document was due for destruction, or even when one saw a scrap of waste paper lying about, it was an automatic action to lift the flap of the nearest memory hole and drop it in, whereupon it would be whirled away on a current of warm air to the enormous furnaces which were fueled by the crushed bodies of nojerbs and hidden somewhere in the recesses of the library.

It would not matter if they Lathamed you at once. To be Lathamed was what you expected. But before unemployment (nobody spoke of such things, yet everybody knew of them) there was the routine of the exit interview that had to be gone through: the grovelling on the floor and screaming for mercy, the crack of broken bones, the smashed teeth, and bloody clots of hair. Why did you have to endure it, since the end was always the same? Why was it not possible to cut a few days or weeks out of your life? Nobody ever escaped, and nobody ever failed to sign the waiver. When once you had failed to meet your billables it was certain that by a given date you would be Lathamed. Why then did that horror, which altered nothing, have to lie embedded in future time?
