Yep, the turnaround story of the year. Went from shitty, piss-poor 1st semester grades to a 3.6. From bottom 25% to soundly beating the curve. My cumulative is just over 3.3. I am so fucking psyched!
So take that RWA and everyone else who said I'd fail miserably.
Oh, and thanks people who said I'd turn it around.

Proactive measures.
- Was more active in class instead of just passively trying to take it in.
- Didn't outline. This may not be a good idea for many, but for me outlining wasted a ton of time and yielded little benefit.
- Talked to the prof before exams.
- Yeah, experience really helped me understand what is going on. 1st semester I was lost. Here I knew what to focus on.
- Improved my research and writing skills. One of my As was legal research and writing.
Note, that I'm still not anywhere near perfect. I got one B where I was sure I'd do better. Plus, I had classes where I was just better. 2/3 As were in elective classes with 2Ls and 3Ls there, and classes I simply knew a lot about coming in.

That's usually what I'm hearing. Lots of people who did great 1st semester doing worse. Don't worry, as long as its good enough to get a 2L summer job it doesn't matter. Then you can really slide (and many do).

I'm right around median at the end of 1L. I'm satisfied, though obviously I'll work to keep improving. Given where I was at the end of 1st semester this definitely exceeded my expectations.

Neither do you. School doesn't rank or release such information. 3.6ish is around top 30%, 3.0 is around bottom 30% and 3.3 is around median. All anyone (except the administration) can do in terms of specifics is speculate.

Yes. And imagine a section took two different classes - say, contracts and torts. What if every person who got a B- in the first class got a B in the second? Now imagine that each student took, say...6 or 7 classes.

Right, but if you add the maximums of A+, As and A-s you still won't get 100%, you'll get 82%. Meaning that another 18% would need to get B+s or below to balance it. So no, that actually wouldn't work.
Regardless, since you want to win this so much I'll just let you. You're right. I'm below 50th percentile. I don't really care, given that I'll likely make a secondary journal and get a 2L firm job. And that's all that matters to me at this point.

B+ is the median grade. Hence median is about 3.33, fair enough. So I'm barely under 50th percentile if you want to split hairs. How this matters I really don't know. I'm only 1/3 of the way through. The 2 classes this summer should push be above the median.
Here's what does matter - I've figured out how to play the LS game. I'll likely get a 2L firm job. I'll likely get on a secondary journal. Given how I started I'm very happy.

You have a cumulative gpa of ~3.3. Seeing as how that is below the median (or 40th percentile) for any single class, it's a real stretch to think you're not in the bottom half.
Date: June 11th, 2005 9:19 PM Author: Maize Sticky Set
Okay, fine. I concede that I am in the bottom half of my class, though barely so (why? because it really doesn't matter). Nevertheless, as long as I keep doing what I did this semester I'll be fine.

Wow.
An absolutely fucking brutal bump.
And for the record, I'm going to go ahead and help myself to your "turnaround story of the year" trophey.
Unbeknowest to me, my 1st semester grades would never in a million years have gotten me a job and, only by blind providence, my 2nd semester GPA came through and insured me employment.

maybe you've commented on this already, but do you have any idea at all why this is happening? it's depressing to see someone with a good gpa at one of the top law schools in the country have no luck at all.

I remember back in the day how he used to brag how he was virtually guaranteed a Biglaw job since he was accepted to NU. He may still get one eventually but he's being treated to a big slice of humble pie right now.

Keep applying. I know people right now at Michigan with horrible grades who are having really good luck with sending out resumes to firms that don't come to campus.

I want to finish mass mailing this week before going that route. I'll send out the last 20 apps for NYC before moving on to LA/SFO. And I'll try a few more cities too, maybe someone will bite.

See top of thread. 1st semester was a disaster (never to be repeated), 2nd semester was much better, then I screwed up bidding for OCI, then I salvaged everything late in the game. While incredibly stressful all's well that ends well.

Well, not exactly. Getting a good firm job in the fall of 2L year isn't having "more trouble landing a job than anyone at your school." Some people don't get the biglaw firm they want at all for 2L summer.

You reek of failure. I eagerly await being regaled with tales of your failure of the N.Y. Bar. Promise to report back with your explicit suicide plans?

Like I said, that wouldn't be the end of the world. Shit like that can happen to anyone. But you nay-sayers crack me up. Read this thread where my failure has been predicted many times over.

Sweetie-pie, getting dinged at numerous callbacks and not getting a job until nearly Thanksgiving IS failure. Taking the ONLY job that was available to you IS failure. Most of us here had multiple options.
Being with that worthless leech IS failure. Enjoy sharing 160k in NYC.
Date: June 1st, 2007 1:01 AM Author: purple spectacular base quadroon
It wasn't the only job available, I had more callbacks available to me. I just really liked the firm, canceled/rejected the other callbacks, and stuck with the firm where I had an offer. Ironically, the best firms actually gave me call backs late in the game. The earlier callback firms were pretty mediocre (again, poor bidding results during OCI). I also didn't interview in 3L because I liked my 2L firm.
That's not what failure is. Failure is not getting a decent job. Period. But feel free to keep telling yourself that your shit smells sweeter than mine.
Somehow I doubt you're getting more than $160K+bonus in NYC.
