But not all of it. If you set a cheeto on fire, you're not left with something of the same weight afterward. There are by products, but it isn't the bulk of the weight.

If you put the cheeto in a sealed container on a scale with a little spark thing inside to light it, and then it burned up in the container, the weight would remain unchanged.

I wouldn't be surprised if you lose less weight to shit when you're dieting than when you aren't. Probably your intestines work extra hard to uptake nutrients when you're deficient.

some by products can also be released through the lungs, which is why those losing weight fast can have funky breath, but this is tiny compared to what is released via the urine.

My body is not a nuclear reactor, therefore I experience conservation of mass. Where do the products of the burning process go mainly? Pee, poop, breath?
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:29 PM Author: rusted passionate native
If you could collect all the exhaust from the back of the car, it would equal in mass the gasoline you put in the tank, plus the mass of the air intake.
Muscles are in a constant state of building up (anabolism) and breaking down (catabolism). Exercise inhibits catabolism, resulting in a net gain of muscle.
Lack of exercise (or, as pointed out above, overexercise in some situations, as well as lack of food) results in a net loss because catabolism preponderates (is that a word?).

Well, c'mon, think conservation of mass. When you burn paper, it's not like the paper goes poof and there's no longer any paper. The byproducts are ash and smoke. In your body, the byproducts are in your bloodstream.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:30 PM Author: Vibrant cream regret
This is negligable. I assumed the OP was referring to the bulk of the mass.
And this analogy doesn't work when you're comparing body chemistry either, since soot and smoke are made up of solids that were involved in the burning. But this isn't important.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:48 PM Author: Swashbuckling foreskin
yeah, it makes it easier to kick out the byproducts. If you don't do this your kidneys can become backlogged with fat byproducts, which causes problems.
Drinking lots of water keeps the system running so you can kick out all of the fat byproducts.

you are confusing energy and mass here. Of course the energy is used up, but the resulting mass after the energy is released is the same, and has to go somewhere. We excrete it.

Fat is broken down to create glycogen or ketones. Ketones are either broken down farther into glygogen or released in urine, sweat and breath. Glycogen when burned is CO2 and Water, which is released through urine, sweat and breath.
The vast majority of this weight leaves through the urine, the remaining through sweat and breath.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:09 PM Author: Vibrant cream regret
I understand your logic - I just can't seem to remember the actual explanation. I'll confess this. But I remember my chem teacher explaining why this isn't the majority of the weight.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:09 PM Author: Swashbuckling foreskin
I can't find anything that gives an explicit breakdown one way or the other. Probably because it varies depending on how much water one drinks. I believe the body tries to piss it out first and when that doesn't work it gets perspirated out. If I remember correctly about half of the resulting co2 is breathed out and half is pissed out.
But the two oxygens are brought in through breathing, mostly, so the only thing you are really losing is the C through breath. But its not a perfect reaction when fat is burned, so you have all these random particle floating around tha tare pissed out. Then all of the h2o is pissed out and about half the c02
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:54 PM Author: Swashbuckling foreskin
its called a side comment.
The point is that for 5 pounds of fat loss, you're going to piss out about 4.99 pounds of it, typically. The rest goes out via sweat and breath through evaporation.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:01 PM Author: spectacular stain personal credit line
assuming a totally clean burn, water and CO2 are the by product of glycogen burn, alot of weight loss is an incomplete burn tho, and creates ketones, which also escape through breath, sweat and urine.

That is chemical energy release from bonds breaking. But just because I break the fatty acids in my beer belly into little bits doesn't make me any lighter--the bits have to get OUT of my body. DO they go out in my breath, poo, or pee?
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:30 PM Author: glittery aquamarine stock car sweet tailpipe
The question is not how you burn calories. At one point there were big fat globules in your tummy. At another point they're gone. They don't just go poof into thin air. Fat globules don't turn into energy. E=MC^2 is not at work in metabolism.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:35 PM Author: Vibrant cream regret
The question isn't that clear, actually.
Calories have weight, though. One gram of protein has about four calories. One gram of fat has about nine calories. So changing the question from calories to weight doesn't change anything.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:37 PM Author: spectacular stain personal credit line
calories do NOT HAVE WEIGHT. one gram of fat, when burned, expends 9 calories, and protein 4. however, this doesnt mean the mass goes away, it only moves from a higher chemical energy state to a lower chemical energy state. the mass remains the same.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:43 PM Author: Swashbuckling foreskin
you're making all the wrong points.
Calories don't have weight. Fat has weight and has potential calories. The calorie is just an energy unit.
When the body burns fat it breaks it down into smaller pieces, releasing the potential energy stored in teh chemical bonds between the molecules. But no matter is destroyed. So the by products, that prior to the burning fo the fat made up the fat, are then released into the bloodstream where the kidneys filter them out and where you then piss them out.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:47 PM Author: Marvelous green set round eye
In order for fat to turn to heat, fat cells are loosened from their habitats and dissolved via a metabolic process that leaves only the husk of a cell and broken-down fat parts, which are taken out of your circulatory system via the kidneys.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:37 PM Author: rusted passionate native
Although I now know that many lawyers are idiots, I am no closer to knowing the answer. Among those who actually understand that mass is conserved in the human body, there remains disagreement on the poop/pee/breath front.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:45 PM Author: Razzmatazz sadistic boltzmann
wouldn't it just be the same as when your body gets rid of the by-products of digesting food. there is probably less solid waste product but the process would be the same. instead of turning to food you have eaten for energy the body looks to stored energy in the fat cells. the digestion would be similar.

It's piss. I've been dieting recently and you don't shit more on a diet. You actually shit less b/c your body uses more of the stuff you consume. Peeing more is definitely noticeable.
If you look up stuff about Atkins, you'll find some FAQs mentioning a funny odor in urine and they explain that's how your body expels weight.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:47 PM Author: spruce soul-stirring lettuce
I'm not reading this thread as it seems like a waste of time, but I always thought the majority of lost weight had been converted to energy to generate heat. Like wood being consumed in a fire or something.
I mean, I don't think the ashes weigh as much as the original wood used, but I could be wrong. I suck at science.
There's no way you made it through general chemistry and failed to understand the concept of an exothermic reaction unless you are literally borderline retarded.
That's something you learn within the first 6 weeks of the class. If you remember anything at all about organic chemistry you should know it. Either you never took it or may not want to brag about having taken it on the interweb.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:52 PM Author: spruce soul-stirring lettuce
Ah, ok.
I don't really suck at science so much as I just don't care for it. If it's explained to me, I will usually understand it though I'll inevitably forget it.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:05 PM Author: Vibrant cream regret
Because you're always chiming in and insulting me when I disagree with someone. You always start out with the ad homs before you ever get to a point. You're really childish. And as soon as I defend myself or prove you wrong, you conveniently disappear from the thread.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:12 PM Author: Swashbuckling foreskin
this is because you argue for hours and say the same things over and over and I get tired of having to repeat myself over and over or actually have to do something not involved with xoxo.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:16 PM Author: Vibrant cream regret
No, you chimed in on a couple of attack threads. You're always saying that the argument I get into are stupid. You've said things like "This is why everyone gets frustrated with you . . . blah blah blah." This is something you're walways saying to me.
There;'s still the fact that I never choose to bitch at you when i you see being stupid on a thread.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 9:57 PM Author: Swashbuckling foreskin
yeah, but at least you can see what other people are saying and see what is going on. Rasquach seems to still be convinced we're all tricking her and that you really don't piss off the byproducts of energy through fat burning.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:07 PM Author: Vibrant cream regret
well, I've clearly given up the idea that you're all trying to trick me.
I just vaguely remember an explanation given by my chem teacher freshman year, and can't remember it. I just remember that the theory being touted here is wrong.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:45 PM Author: Vibrant cream regret
The idea that the prof was wrong is out. I'm considering the possibility that maybe there were some additional details or a sidebar to what you're saying that I can't remember, and seem significant even though your theory may be correct to an extent.
The body biochemically turns fat into other things as follows. It's just a chemical reaction.
Fat + Oxygen = Energy + Carbon-Dioxide
As for the other two sources of energy,
Protein + Oxygen = Energy + Carbon-Dioxide + Urea
Sugar + Oxygen = Energy + Carbon-Dioxide
(I don't remember but I think water might be on one or both sides of all three equations.)
You'll be jealous when you learn that some organisms have cells which burn fat just for heat. So they can burn a lot of calories just by going somewhere cold.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:34 PM Author: Vibrant cream regret
Now you're being childish again.
And I accused you of leaving after my point, not before. Which you did - the harvard dorms thread for starters.
I was busy on the other thread. I am finished here - I said above that I remember mychme teacher saying there was a differnt explanation, but I don't remember it, and I won't argue it. I also said that I just want an explanation of why this other view is correct, and I'm still unconvinced.
Date: October 2nd, 2005 10:37 PM Author: Swashbuckling foreskin
wtf?
I never saw your point in the harvard thread, I had other threads to read and *gasp* things to do in real life. Later I came back to it, saw what you had said and responded.
I've been dieting recently and you don't shit more on a diet. You actually shit less b/c your body uses more of the stuff you consume. Peeing more is definitely noticeable.

wow, I always thought people were making unsubstantiated claims when they were saying you were dumb and a moron. After reading this thread I have reached the conclusion that you are mentally retarded.

I'm not much of a science scholar, but wouldn't the proportion lost through sweat be higher? There is no way it's 99% urine. Your proportion of sweat to pee, especially when working out a lot (and thus losing weight) is not even close to 99:1. Atheletes can lose 5-10 pounds during a game, and it ain't because they're taking pee breaks.
Date: October 8th, 2006 2:20 PM Author: Shivering bat-shit-crazy school
Well, on a day that I work out a lot, I would sweat through a shirt. It's hard to say how much I piss in terms of 'soaking through shirts', but probably not more than 3-4. So the proportion is maybe 20-25% sweat. This is a pretty rough, and gross, analysis, but maybe you can see my point.

This is my lawyerly, dangerously unscientific answer:
#1. You eat fruit. Your body tacks on a bunch of carbon atoms to make CO2 from O2, releasing energy and making your body lighter after you expel this CO2.
#2. Plants take CO2 and strip the carbon atoms away, releasing O2 into the atmosphere. They accumulate a bunch of carbon, get really heavy, and produce a bunch of fruit.
Date: October 9th, 2006 6:05 PM Author: Diverse transparent nibblets
Touche. I forgot all the details of cellular respiration (or whatever process is involved). Looking at the process from a layman's perspective, though, it seems that tracking the carbon is one way to tell where the weight is going, regardless of the actual mechanism.
