When the biggest political story of the year reached a dramatic and unexpected climax late Tuesday night, our newsroom turned on a dime and did what it has done for nearly two years — cover the 2016 election with agility and creativity.
After such an erratic and unpredictable election there are inevitable questions: Did Donald Trump’s sheer unconventionality lead us and other news outlets to underestimate his support among American voters? What forces and strains in America drove this divisive election and outcome? Most important, how will a president who remains a largely enigmatic figure actually govern when he takes office?
As we reflect on the momentous result, and the months of reporting and polling that preceded it, we aim to rededicate ourselves to the fundamental mission of Times journalism. That is to report America and the world honestly, without fear or favor, striving always to understand and reflect all political perspectives and life experiences in the stories that we bring to you. It is also to hold power to account, impartially and unflinchingly. You can rely on The New York Times to bring the same fairness, the same level of scrutiny, the same independence to our coverage of the new president and his team.
We cannot deliver the independent, original journalism for which we are known without the loyalty of our readers. We want to take this opportunity, on behalf of all Times journalists, to thank you for that loyalty.
Sincerely,
Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher

it was insanely stupid. they've been mocking trump and the right for a couple years now for calling out the bs of the MSM. they're just confirming the attacks against themselves.

Again, fake news doesn't refer to breitbart and the other right wing outlets. Literally refers to fake news that is made up and attributed to non existent outlets. This brand of fake news actually is a problem.
I don't know why cons are so opposed to this idea.....

Not sure we're on the same page.
Conservatives are not in favor of 100% made up fake stories. They're in favor of pointing out that msm are full of biased bullshit. msm thought they could use the term "fake news" to hurt Breitbart and conservatives as well as the 100% fake sites. but msm chose poorly. they chose a meme that describes themselves and now they are butthurt that people are using to describe the msm.

I've mostly seen the MSM refer to literal fake news as fake news. If they're extending it to right wing media - which is mostly biased dishonest garbage btw - then I disagree with them. Any examples you want to point to?

even Slate says it's used to trash non-left media more broadly:
"In recent weeks, the term fake news has been applied by various media sources to everything from Breitbart News to Donald Trump’s tweets to the media commentary of CNN’s Brian Stelter."
and I love how they threw in some no-name sites on the left that nobody's ever heard of in order to 1) appear objective and 2) make their lib audiences feel good they themselves aren't guilty of reading fake news
lmao this is typical lib equivocating nonsense. for now, it'll be abbcnews.com and cnnn.co.de, but eventually they'll use the term to refer to any right-wing sites. or all their articles will be about the former, but the facebook censorship will include the latter.
same as they started off saying "hate speech" = swastikas on a temple or hanging gays, but now wanting to keep chicks with dicks out of your daughter's locker room is a hate act.
