It's like a disease. Sometimes it creeps slowly. The guy in the office next to you starts stooping just a little more each day, putting on weight, acting sluggish, speaking more softly, and slowly he fades away.
With others, they go from striding valiantly up to the Keurig machine and laughing with the receptionists to a defeated husk in a matter of days.
It doesn't matter, in the end, which course it takes. Both lead to a departure memo announcing that he has left the firm to pursue other opportunities, an office that's empty for a week, then some new, fresh faced litigator telling you that he just finished clerking on the fourth circuit and he's excited to be here. You'll take him out precisely one time for an overpriced power lunch and wonder how long he'll last. His day will come. And yours.

not flame - this is what happens to lots of biglaw associates who burn out. we had a case with institutional client and boomer partner told me to assemble the "best team possible." there was a 7th year associate a few years ago who could write appellate briefs like a kid out in the rain -- some guys just have "it" and he was the best. anyway the guy flames out big time and goes off the grid. i really wanted him on my team -- found him competing at an underground kumite tournament in jakarta. i watched him win his first match from near the exit so he couldn't see me. after his match i went up to him while he was facing away taking off the tape on his fists and he out of nowhere, still looking away, says "you're a long way from home, t-unit." i told him i needed him for one last matter -- that we needed the best appellate brief writer on the planet, it might lead to more work but i couldn't promise anything, but that i would get his daily seamless $$ limit raised to $50. i'll never forget his expression -- just sort of stared off in the distance and said that was a different life, he's not even the same person anymore. he said it was good seeing me again & then put on oversized aviator sunglasses (likely to conceal his bruises) and disappeared out the back alley door into the rain
