I cannot even conceive of a re-animated Christian west. Beyond the plummeting demographics of self-identifying Christians (mainstream Protestants hit zero by 2050, Christians in general hit zero before century's end), the ontological framework is just not present. However we are building westerners, we are not building them to be Christians anymore.
There are a million possible points-of-no-return: Luther, Darwin, WWI, Vatican II seem to be popular answers.

i point more towards darwin than the others and the failure of catechesis. christianity is dying because cradle christians (especially catholics) don't actually know their faith. they know the caricatures of their faith presented to them by reddit. so it's easy to discard because they don't actually have anything of value to cling on to. if they actually understood their faith, they would value it more. and that ties with darwin because once you understand your faith, you can engage science in winsome way. most of the I LOVE SCIENCE redditor crowd are engaging in the religion of scientism and don't actually believe in the scientific method.

i can only speak ime here, but confirmation was definitely a HS thing. Disciplines do change and are local to a degree but i would agree with you that 8 would be way too young imo.
All my cousins were confirmed at that age, as were the Catholic kids in my elementary school who had to leave for CCD. Went to Catholic high/middle school and no one was confirmed when I went there that I knew of.

yeah, those types of things are left to the ordinary of the diocese. i think 8 is way too young. i actually think first communion is better for 8 LET ALONE confirmation.

are you sure that wasn't just First Communion?
If so as beckerstead says it's probably region-dependent. My SSPX church doesn't allow it earlier than age 12 and most kids are around 16. It's left up to the parents, and if parents want earlier than 14 or so the priest has to agree.

It was probably Luther, but it was going to happen eventually. If it wasn't Luther it would have been someone else.
You are right about mainline protestantism, by the way, I don't see how they survive. I drive by these impressive Anglican churches and wonder who still goes to them. These denominations are little more than social clubs now-- like the Jaycees or the Lion's Club

the "affirming and inclusive" ones are almost completely dead. at a certain point, if all you do is parrot liberal talking points and don't really stand for anything, why bother going? you can worship sitting on your couch watching cnn for that.

I've told people if they are going to turn churches into a social club I'd rather just go golfing.
I was at a novus ordo parish and didn't even go to church during the summer. Once I joined a more traditional church I looked forward to Sunday Mass and never skip now.

I think youve hit the big ones.
Luther signaled the church's inability to contain reform. There was no good reason Rome couldnt have accepted that corruption had gotten a little out of hand and kept Europe under one church. It had managed this for centuries.
After Luther, there was literally room to do something different without total social opprobrium. Whatever his good points, the path to dyke pastors in trans-acceptance-colored gowns playing mini-golf in empty cathedrals was a direct line.
Darwin ushered in the notion that to be "smart" was to be hostile to the church. Proles have been retarded forever, but before the scientific and tech stuff they assumed their betters were men of faith. With the popularization of Darwin and Science, the guiding assumption of proles was that it signaled intelligence to be a non-believer.
In ww1 the church showed that its moral teaching could not prevent the near-extinction of a generation of men. Christianity's european fortress watched its youth slaughtered not by any outside enemy, but by itself, and Christianity could offer no way out. After that war, no one could go forward with any full-hearted sincerity anymore.
And, of course, VII just signaled the final capitulation. Traditions that had held firm for a thousand years bent the knee to acoustic guitars and modernism.

I think this is the main thing. WWI was the death knell of the West and it never fully recovered.

Being a non-believer does correlate with intelligence, that is not merely a perception. Well over 90% of the National Academy of Sciences are atheists. That doesn't mean atheism is true, but "proles" are not wrong to think the smartest people are less religious.

Christianity seems more neutral at best and detrimental at worst than anything, not sure what decline it was staving off. The Catholic Church as an institution for example has become so evil it's simply pushed people to lose faith.

This, right here, is the problem with multicultural societies. I understand that you, a Jew, sees christianity throughout history as at best neutral and at worst bad. I'm sure Muslims agree with you. Almost no one from a Christian background will agree. Christianity defined western culture since the Roman Empire.
The Catholic Church is in decline because it has a liberal socialist as a Pope. Basically, everything that happened since JP2 was a disaster. Mainline churches also libbed out and now have purple haired dyke ministers. Reformed Judaism is just as bad but Jews don't see it as an issue because your culture is beyond hope.

the crusades and inquisitions were a sign of vitality. Any vital culture will fight for more space around its borders, will try to reclaim lost lands, and will have a juridical method for protecting its central dogma.
an outsider might not *like* these, but they are central to the life-force of any vital society.
btw, your very standard for criticizing them is a christian one (you should be LOVING your enemies!)

Upset Jew doesn't know shit about the Crusades-- he only knows that modern libs use it as an example of how the Church was evil and attacked poor little old Muslims.

a valid criticism would not be "hypocrites!", but rather "if everyone breaks this rule, maybe the rule is flawed"
this gets to a really interesting thread in christianity, imo.
as a religion developed by a colonized, powerless people, it developed its ethic as a kind of moderating function. Jesus of the NT doesnt say overthrow the system and implement economic equality, he says give more to the poor. He doesnt say tear down the prisons, he says visit the inmates. He doesnt say liberate women, but just be merciful to prostitutes.
These arent moral rules that you can use to run an empire, they are rules you can use to humanize an empire someone more ruthless is already running.
It may be an inherent flaw that seeded Christianity's fall, I dunno. But im interested in int

In the last 20 years or so. Churches became liberal and everything except christianity became cool. At least for the West, christianity want from nothing to dominant in places like E Europe and is going strong in Africa and Latin America.

This happened as a reaction to the loss of congregations due to people getting turned off by the Christian Right/Moral Majority. The 70s power hungry takeover of Christian politics by charlatans like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, James Dobson and the political hacks who both enabled them and exploited them like Paul Weyrich and Ralph Reed basically ensure the demographic collapse of American Christianity by cheapening it and secularizing it, the way Protestants always make everything small and stupid.

if we lose the christian narrative then we all have to become philosophers which, even for hegel, relies on religious experience as expressed in the church. were fucked

People will always have religion. Christianity is being replaced by lib dogma. Look at the insane blm and antifa protestors/rioters and tell me they don't have the fire of religion burning in their eyes.
the narrative is shit and spiritually empty. how many pentecosts did the george floyd event cause? pentecost is a universal mark of spiritual understanding. we need narratives that causes pentecosts

The Industrial Revolution and concomitant increase in standards of living. When people are comfortable, they forget about their Creator. When danger and death are near, they seek refuge in Him.
Material circumstances have psychological and ultimately spiritual effects.

1648 Treaty of Westphalia was the point of no return. Prior to it, nationalism was subservient to familial and religious allegiances, which dominated European affairs. State sovereignty and non-interference in matters of faith irreversibly weakened Church influence and eventually lost its eternal importance for the average person. Each passing generation saw Christians less and less willing to fight and bleed for their faith. After 1648 Faith was relegated as a slave of the state.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
