But through it all they were real. And when they did appear in the field, often at some dire, eleventh hour, hope seeming lost, the battle nearing its red end, evil to triumph over good and so upend the Good Promise of God's Creation, they had the capacity to instantaneously turn the tide; the sight of their standard rising over some high ridge line would stagger the opposing force and over the din of battle, exploding ordinance against alloyed armor, beams of directed energy starbursting high in the sky, you'd hear the cheer shout go up among the ranks of the good: "Skadden comes!"
