This is just a garbage made up non-story though. The narrative is some critical race theory crap but it is paper thin and translucent and won’t even hold up to the hot August sun let alone vigorous scrutiny.

A few things I'll comment on.

This house sits on a very busy road. Houses along that stretch of Northern Parkway usually sell for around 400-550ish. This is backed up by real estate data across the last few years. This is particularly backed up by that similar house next door sold in December 2021 for 475k.

Houses not on Northern Parkway, just a block off, will sell for more. But I'm sure we understand the differential between facing Northern Parkway and being on a quieter block that doesn't get tens of thousands of cars roaring past your house every single day.

There are more expensive blocks on Northern Parkway, a few blocks to the west. But those houses are bigger, the lots much bigger, often approaching an acre, houses sit further back from the street, and these houses serve as the periphery of a significantly more expensive neighborhood. Northern Parkway was widened from a narrow 2-lane residential street into a 6 lane wide mini-highway in the 1970s, while those grander houses were built back in the 1920s.

Comps are also difficult for outsiders who don't understand the area. State valuations do not factor in differences between a busy road and internal streets. And in a neighborhood like Homeland, there are big price differentials between an elegant 1920s stone house with walnut panelings and all the bells and whistles of the era, and a boring post-war brick box like this house. State tax assessments treat all houses the same based on square footage. Two houses of the same size with the same square footage will be assessed the same by the state even if one is in pristine, fully updated conditions, and the other a hoarder's property with original 1930s kitchens and bathrooms. States only care about taxes, not market value.

At the end of the day, this couple's house is on Northern Parkway. The low end real estate assessment of 475 is realistic given the market trends at the time and location. I'm not going to wish them luck because they're either greedy or in denial.
