It happens all the time among Asians, but chinks are notorious for it.
Regarding the intelligence necessary for the capability to cheat, there’s an overriding moral issue. It’s true that dumb people are too dumb to cheat. However, that threshold is very low (think having an IQ high enough for you to feed yourself). At the higher IQs, morality can override what is otherwise in the individual’s best interest. |

In 2013, when it was announced that more students took the ACT than the SAT for the first time ever, the College Board put out a press release in 2014 that it would be redesigning the SAT in 2016. At that time, the College Board made many format changes to the SAT to make it an easier exam, including making it a shorter exam, making the reading passages less difficult, and no longer penalizing students for incorrect answers. As a result, in 2017, the SAT regained the lead — more students took the SAT than the ACT.
Patel says it's become a race to the bottom: who can make the test easier between the SAT and the ACT. More students will choose to take the easier exam.
The College Board is under immense pressure to justify why students should still take the SAT now that test-optional colleges are here to stay. Therefore, the College Board will use the 2024 SAT redesign as an opportunity to tout how the new version of the test will accurately measure what students learn in high school and correctly predict how they will perform in college. The truth is, the SAT is just a standardized test that measures how much a student prepared for the test."

Note that within each racial category, kids in NH do about 80 points better than MI kids. 80 points, by the way, is nothing to sneeze at - it is about 0.4 std's. Michigan has some work to do.
Also, NH has only about 1% african americans, while MI has about 11%. But the results are not what you might think. Africans americans in NH (where they are much more dilute) do hugely better than African americans in MI (as noted by looking at the top bands). I believe a few papers have taken note of this, to wit: Below a certain concentration, African american [ affinity groups / segregated communities ] cannot form and the African americans who are isolated individuals in a white matrix tend to perform much like whites. This is an argument in favor of the score differences being cultural more so than genetic.
Another argument I have seen made about genetics is that humans evolved to live in tribes and not as individuals. So it is possible that some traits, even if genetic, are not exhibited as strongly because of the human need to conform to the tribal norm. |

And the fact that we are talking about a tiny group that made an unusual choice to live in an effectively all-white state suggests that they may not be. People already noted Dartmouth profs' kids and boarding school kids (who basically take the SAT to get into boarding school so test way above average). There are also niche categories like black doctor moving away from urban hellscape and African immigrant with way above-average abilities who lands something an engineering/CS job in New England (yes these guys exist - we are not talking about a large number of people here).
Also more mixed race kids given scarcity of black partners in area, and mixed race kids are all over the place in terms of how they self-identify. In NH a half-black kid is black to most people. And marking black makes it easier on the AA people in admissions rather than forcing them to discern whether you're the Samoan/Nigerian or Jewish/Asian kind of mixed race. |
