I read and understood the situation outlined by LW1 as well as the advice given. But I'm left with the queasy feeling that a white mentor trying to walk away from a program because they didn't get a white mentee would have resulted in a vastly different conversation.

LW1 would be doing the mentee a favor to decline. I was once assigned a mentor who told me she didn't want to do it, then detailed the inherent privileges I had that weren't available to her. I informally sought out another mentor, and learned a lot. After my tryout period my mentor advised against hiring me, saying I lacked empathy. My informal mentor intervened and I got the job. LW1 would be a bad mentor. That's reason enough to decline.

I'm cheered by the fact that Prof. Appiah, confronted with the question about transracial mentorship, managed to address it with exquisite tact, thoughtfulness, and equanimity. Another reader, equally determined to clarify the would-be mentor's ethical concerns but less inclined to make nice, might have pointed out that her claim about her would-be mentee, "I don't have anything against her," is flatly contracted by most of the rest of her letter, in which she makes clear that she does indeed hold that would-be mentee's race--her whiteness--against her. There's a word for those who negatively prejudge others in this way, on the basis of race. It's not a nice word. The irony here, as Prof. Appiah wisely notes, is that the would-be mentee, a white woman, may well have asked to be paired with a Black female mentor--concerned with social justice as so many younger white people have become these days. That white would-be mentee might even have been required to submit a diversity statement in her law school application, testifying to her anti-racist bona fides and her yearning to work with and learn from Black elders in the field. Viewed in this context, her would-be Black mentor's a priori, race-based resistance to working with her isn't just problematic on a purely human level, but it's at odds with the just, equitable, and inclusive world that contemporary DEI ideology is seeking to bring into being.
