Lived in NYC for 10 years, Mexico City 10 yrs, my next city should be...

If you're looking for more beach vibes I'd go down to the Amalfi coast. If you want a "big" city then Florence > Milan > Rome > Naples. If you want a medium size city Look at Lucca, Arezzo, Genoa, Ravenna.

Getting around. Milan looks like Switzerland compared to Rome, but Madrid looks like London compared to Milan.
I always just use Gran Via as an example
Obviously that's main showcase street there but pretty much the entire city operates like that with functional American style organized streets, demarcated clean sidewalks, overall structure to shops. Nowhere in Italy, even the rich northern part, is organized that way and it becomes extremely grating for living after a while if there for more than a beach vacation. |

It's has its nice neighborhoods and own energy in a way but its extremely crowded and chaotic and ramshackle, half of the city is sparse with poorly planned 1960s era ugly tenement blocks, the subway stations are dirty and cramped and annoying to navigate, the streets are a mess overall. It would be easier living in the outer ring near Zona Risorgimento/ Porto Romana in the east or nicer Wagner area in the west, but again those areas are soulless.
Theres no reason to live in Milan if you arent doing BIG SERVICE job there or a model getting put up. |
