I'd base the rankings on student quality by GPA/LSAT, reputational scores, and jobs data. Maybe include a small factor for a leiteresque faculty quality component measured by scholarly publications.

As a prospective student, I'd balance job opportunities vs what my own debtload would be. I don't give a shit what the average debtload is -- that just boosts public schools in the rankings (outside the elite schools, which all cost $70k and offer like a $3k a year discount for in-state students)

Y is the best because of selectivity, then H. S is really for snowflakes who couldn't get into Y or even H. CC have solid placement, N a step below. P and V are impressive in placement but a step below; D attracts an unusually strong class. M and B are among the least selective and are weak in placement (see great recession stats, 2nd and 3rd worst after G), but still a step above the rest; they also benefit from boomer and gen x flame. NCG are the weakest; people like to shit on G, but it has a metro advantage and a substantial minority of their students punch above their weight, such that it's at least equal to N and C; there's really nothing special I can think of about the two besides Chicago/JPS and "Ivy League"/small class size

If not for the yield differential I'd consider H more prestigious than Y and even S for that matter. H is at least a law school - not clear what they're doing in New Haven and Palo Alto is "law." They're unrigorous (see no grades policy) daycare centers (e.g., SLS/YLS Fed Soc fiascos) for extra time accommodations rich kids. I can't say the same about H.

"CC have solid placement, N a step below": A distinction without a difference. CLS and NYU mog UChi on biglaw placement and UChi mogs the two former in clerkship placement. To suggest that there's a meaningful difference to justify the "step down" is not grounded in observable reality.

"D attracts an unusually strong class": D is for those who by the skin of their teeth were accepted Priority Track and were dinged everywhere else - to suggest otherwise betrays a Blue Devil bias.
