not like the manhattan project. they could've taken this all in-house a couple years ago but chose to let the private companies do it. they're treating it like a consumer product and not a world altering weapon.

The Navier–Stokes equations are also of great interest in a purely mathematical sense. Despite their wide range of practical uses, the conjecture that they have smooth (meaning infinitely differentiable) or bounded solutions in three dimensions was an unsolved problem for many years until September 2026, when it was proven false, with some controversy around the authorship of the result. This is called the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem. The Clay Mathematics Institute has called this one of the seven most important open problems in mathematics and has offered a $1 million prize for a solution or a counterexample. [3][4] OpenAI has publicly stated it will decline this prize.
In September 2026, OpenAI announced that an unreleased internal model had produced a proof, along with a formalization in the Lean proof assistant, that a smooth, finite-energy three-dimensional incompressible flow subject to a smooth external force can develop a singularity in finite time; the company stated that this establishes statements "C" and "D" of Fefferman's official problem formulation.[5] As of September 2026 the claim had not been independently verified by the mathematical community or assessed by the Clay Mathematics Institute, and the announcement was accompanied by a dispute over priority with mathematicians working on closely related results for the Euler equations.[6][7]

Wow, a thieving jew put out a statement that even though everyone knows he’s a thieving jew, he totally wasn’t a thieving jew about THIS thing his jewish company just obviously stole! Case closed guys!

getting ‘human genome project’ vibes from this in that (a) they’ll probably agree to share credit in the end, and (b) it will lead to virtually nothing concrete or useful in the real world and fail to live up to the hype

Why does something like the human genome project or pure math results have to yield instant practical engineering results? That stuff is foundational knowledge that eventually gets built on top of. Most stuff has been historically like this. You need general relativity for gps but it wasn’t immediate. You need quantum mechanics for modern information tech and that wasn’t immediate either
