supplying them were captured.
Atlanta was the biggest battle of the war, imo, since Lincoln seemed doomed to lose the 1864 election before the Union took Atlanta. As Sherman was closing in on the city, Hood attacked his supply lines and assumed that would cause him to retreat. Instead Sherman went around the western side of Atlanta and captured the last railroad supplying it. Once that happened, Hood just packed his bags and abandoned the city without a fight.
The same thing happened at Richmond. Lee had defended the city brilliantly for the entire war, yet once the railroad supplying it was captured, he just abandoned the city.
Executive Mansion Washington, Aug. 23, 1864 This morning, as for some days past, it seems exceedingly probable that this Administration will not be reëlected. Then it will be my duty to so coöperate with the President-elect as to save the Union between the election and the inauguration; as he will have secured his election on such ground that he cannot possibly save it afterwards. A. LINCOLN

Guys at my high school used to continue holding big cities for months against a significantly numerically superior force, even after their means of resupplying the city were cut off. It was nbd.

I get that they were destined to fall eventually. It's just the manner in which immediately after the railroads were captured, arguably the two biggest prizes of the war were abandoned without a fight. Especially considering that the defending generals were Hood and Lee, both of whom were extremely aggressive and tenacious.
Sherman wasn't expecting that, and he almost shit himself when the Atlanta mayor approached him and basically said "the soldiers all left, the city is yours."
