So my roommates and I have discovered a few mice in our kitchen. We live in a third floor apartment in a city, so I wasn't expecting mice. But anyway, we killed one with a mouse trap. But others just walk right around it. Suggestions for getting the other ones?

I thought of that. But I am worried that they will all die behind appliances or in walls and the place may start to smell. Is that a legitimate concern?

1. The landlord should pay for an exterminator.

2. Stop keeping food in the kitchen cupboards (throw out old food, mouse feces=bad).

3. Whatever the exterminator sprays will likely kill a cat, so don't try both at the same time.

The use of cats in pest control is truly underappreciated.

Your main concern in an urban environment in regards to pests is rodents and roaches.

Cats keep both away

not small and hard to find if you're ten pounds and have your face less than ten inches off the floor. cats will kill anything that moves and is smaller than they (them? i'm stupid) that invades your house. they will NOT leave "mouse guts" everywhere. my advice, if you want to commit to a pet for a decade or longer, adopt a cat from a shelter.

if you just want to be rid of the mice or rats, get a HUMANE live trap. catch them and take them to the woods to let them start life over or be owl food. the live traps do work, but i've never had to trap a rat in a house that has a cat. if you want a pet cat, a bonus is that it will be your rat and roach patrol.

stop inviting the animals to the party by having open boxes of food in your kitchen.

for this to work you will need a mean an aggressive cat. thus, you will need to beat it regularly. otherwise the cat will become fat and passive... it's tough to patrol for pests when you sleep 20 hours a day. keep it on its toes, and keep it hungry.

My cat is a roach killing machine. It's like they go into terminator mode. Even if the roach crawls under an appliance or something and my cat can't get to it, he will wait and wait and wait. I once left him guarding the washing machine to go to bed and he was still there waiting for the roach to come out in the morning.

At the very least, they will make you very aware that there is an unwanted intruder in the house. There are times I would never have known there was a bug in my house except for the way my cat was acting.

Here's what you do. Get a hold of a pair of night vision goggles (you can get a good pair for about $699, but you want the kind with tint control and zoom stabilization, so for that you'll probably be spending about $1199). Once you have those, buy some electrical wire (get a 30' wheel for about $50). Get a hold of some wire pegs and place them in the corners of your kitchen. Next tie the electrical wire to the pegs and then run it in a criss-cross pattern just a few inches above the kitchen floor (don't let the wires touch the floor, though). Then get a hold of a free-standing generator (you'll need one that doesn't make sound, they're about $1850). Connect the wire to the generator. At nighttime, before your roommates go to sleep, take a durinal inhibitor pill (it slows your breathing, so that the mice don't sense you and stay away) and then camp out just outside the kitchen, next to the generator. When your roommates have turned out all the lights, hold still. DO NOT MOVE. You might be there for a few hours, but eventually a mouse will appear. Wait until he is moving along the kitchen floor. You should be able to see him with the night vision goggles. Then flip the switch on the generator and a current should run along the wires. This current will play off of the tiles of the kicthen floor and send a small shock of electricity that will spread out instantly across the whole floor. It will be small enough not to spread beyond the wired part of the apartment but strong enough to shock the mouse. It may not kill the mouse, but at least he'll learn that your apartment is no place to fuck around in.

$20 gets you the new electric mousetrap. Battery powered, it has a capacitor in it. you baint the inside with a smidge of peanut butter. mice can't resist and enter the box where they get instantly electrocuted. a little green light blinks so you know you need to empty the box. will kill one within the first 4 hours, guarantee.

Get a cat. If you do not like cats, get an elderly cat from a shelter. It will kill mice/keep mice away just with its scent and it is not as significant of a time comittment. And get a short furred cat, they are less bother.
