Not full ride but good money. Not that many people got jobs through OCI. I am the first to admit that I got lucky. I did bust my ass, however, and I think I am very well prepared to compete against people who went to higher ranked schools.
I do not want to say where the office is located but it is V50.

I went to an HYP for U/G... helps me in the legal market for sure.
However.... I would stop wayyyy short of saying I went to a non t-14 bc of my own choice. I freely admit I went to a "ttt" because my grades were horrendous in UG and there were additional issues with my app (causing me to have to write an addendum and discuss various legal/criminal/disciplinary record matters)
If you rocked OCI.... awesome. But going to a ttt over a t-14 is very risky, Ivy undergrad or not. I know dozens of Ivy grads (specifically HYP grads) who go to/went to law school at "TTT" schools. 80% are doing fantastic; 20% are not.

no grounding in reality? how about you ground yourself in the fact that most of your classmates are fucked while people in the bottom of T14s are getting jobs similar to yours.

The sad thing is that most of you drive IROK's and you are trying to be prestigious. You have no idea what it means to be prestigious and you will be looked down upon by the great majority of your soon-to-be upper class peers

The chip on my shoulder is not actually that big. I think I match up evenly with every other law student that I have encountered with the exception of some HLS students. Most other T14s just had a good day the LSAT was given.

I think the board wisdom is that top students at TTTs still do relatively well. So unless you're a median person at a TTT, I really don't see how this disputes conventional wisdom.
Date: January 19th, 2007 1:25 AM Author: Soul-stirring Property
Well if the conventional wisdom is that top 25% at TTTs do well then this post is meaningless. I do not think, however, this is what this board espouses.
Most people think it is T14 or die, even that means living in Minnesota or Texas for 3 years (and possibly the rest of your life)

except you'll also have that slgiht feeling of inferiority. you'll work a little bit harder, strive a little more, make sure people know you 'could have gone' to "Harvard, Yale, Columbia, or NYU", and brag about how you could get a "V50" for the next several years of your life
chip, meet shoulder. oh, you know each other already? oh, ok.

I don't think the words I could have gone to HLS or CCN have ever left my lips, nor will they ever. I don't think I will brag about a V50, as no one has even heard of my firm, just like the majority of the population hasn't heard of any firm with the exception of Skadden

Not NYC - I could never live in that city.
I do think that many people at the bottom of the T14 had a lucky day when they took the LSAT or they studied their asses off for it. Either way, good for them. My point is that just because you go to a T14 does not make you automatically superior. I have worked with many T14s in different capacities and the vast majority are neither more intelligent nor do they produce a superior work product. I have, however, interacted with a number of HLS students who, in general, are very intelligent and produce great work.

"I have worked with many T14s in different capacities and the vast majority are neither more intelligent nor do they produce a superior work product."
That's because coming from a TTT, most of your contact with T14 students is the very, very bottom of the class that is forced to work with T4 students.
Also, if you didn't study for the LSAT, then you're just a retard. That's about the worst excuse in the book for not getting a good score: "I didn't study very much." You're have horrible, horrible judgment if you didn't study your ass off.
But Congrats on your V50 job. You've done very well for your law school, and now you can consider yourself equal to the bottom trash of the T14 =P

I didn't realize that editors of the T14 law reviews were in the bottom of the class. I didn't ask them their class ranks, but I just assume if you make it on to the law review (and not a secondary journal) at a T14 you are in the top of the class.
Even at Cravath you will come into contact with a number of TTT (not within your office) but possibly across the table. It is not like we live in a Jim Crow segregated society where there are separate drinking fountains for TTT and T14ers.

I never said I didn't care about firm rank. I just went to school in an area I wanted to live in. I didn't say I could have gotten in to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, NYU. I do care about both law school rank and firm rank. However, I can more about where I will be happy about spending three years of my life surrounded by a bunch of dorks

I am feeling pretty tipsy, or else I wouldn't be posting on a message board at 1:30 in the morning. I just re-read that post and it didn't make a whole lot of sense

The lottery does not include going on 10 different call-backs and busting your ass in law school. If I won the lottery, I would have just mass mailed and hoped daddy would hook me up

In all fairness, I probably would have been better off going to a much better school, not doing anyting in terms of work and getting the same type of job. My personality I think is better for having gone to my TTT, as I still have one, unlike most other law students I have met
Date: January 19th, 2007 1:44 AM Author: Soul-stirring Property
I agree with you. The only problem with your thinking is that at the very top schools, the entire student body has been working their whole life to be in the X%. At a TTT, virtually no one has cared about being in that top portion of the class. Therefore, interacting with normal people on a daily basis has been very good for me and I while I have become much more introverted since I entered law school, I think I will be better off than those at the T14

A lot of people have priorities that are called "having a life." This includes having fun. Fun includes exercise, spending time with friends, drinking, doing drugs, and skipping classes because you have better things to do with your time on occasion. Just because you didn't spend your entire life gunning for the best law school to get into doesn't mean that you ended up at law school because law school was something to do.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about. Most people at top law schools went to Ivy UGs where the median GPAs are like 3.5. It does not take much effort at those places to get a 3.6-3.7. Then they studied for a few weeks for the LSAT and got 170+ because they are smart. The vast majority of people at my school are here because it was the path of least resistance to getting a sweet job. Very few have been working hard to be lawyers their whole life, most are just smart and haven't had to work hard.

irok, you're missing the point. the point is that you took a risk and spoke as though you didn't when you spoke of your returns. the fact that you had some control over the outcome doesn't change that.

So your "largest reward" is that you saved a max of about 100k (a lot of T14 students get scholarships) over the course of your lifetime? Your risk-reward doesn't make sense in this situation. Congrats on being a complete douche.
Date: January 19th, 2007 11:07 AM Author: Soul-stirring Property
w00t, you seem pretty insecure yourself. Why is that? If you go to a T14 and have a great job lined up, why so hostile? Is it becuase you have no friends, no significant other, or no hobbies/interests (i.e. a life)?
Date: January 19th, 2007 11:14 AM Author: Soul-stirring Property
You are not answering why you are so insecure and threatened by someone who goes to a TTT. I am impressed by the fact that you go to HLS, maybe I wouldn't be if I met you. The majority of HLSers that I have met are very bright and deserve all of the accolades that they receive.
So what is wrong in your life then? Are you unsure about your relationship with your fiancé? Do you feel inadequate to your classmates? Are you trying to make up for all of those years of being made fun of by people at TTTs? I am sure high school was socially brutal and college probably even worse for you. But all of your hard work paid off and you should be happy
Date: January 19th, 2007 11:19 AM Author: lilac galvanic love of her life
It's annoying that you can't seem to comprehend what people are saying in this thread. I went to a TTT college and went to HLS. Success story, yay! I had to work hard to get where i was, big fucking deal. The path of least resistance would have been to go Ivy -> HLS. You need to shut the fuck up and realize that people don't really care about your biglaw offer because it happens to the top TTT students every year. EVERYONE KNOWS THIS. You aren't special; you are just at the top of your class. So please, try to take the fucking blinders off and STFU.
Date: January 19th, 2007 11:42 AM Author: Soul-stirring Property
Again, not a flame. I just can't believe that people on this board have such narrow vision that they can't believe someone from a TTT, top 25%, and LR can get biglaw.
Please give me an example of me being "pwned."
I posted on this board because people like you are here who can't believe that someone like me could get the same job as you.
Again, why are you so insecure? What is wrong in your life?

Until Summer after my first year I didn't even know that firms paid 125k (now 145) to first year associates, so I don't think my hard work was "fear-driven." I would have been very happy graduating and making the median salary from my law school.
You are missing the whole point about my feelings for my TTT. I am very proud of my TTT. I think it produces, on the whole, more well adjusted lawyers then most other law schools
Date: January 19th, 2007 10:12 AM Author: Soul-stirring Property
If flame = not true, then this is not a flame.
Why is it so hard for most of you to believe that people from TTTs can get good jobs. I actually believe the majority of TTT students don't get good jobs is because they don't apply themselves to the task of getting a job. If they did, many (not most) could get biglaw
Date: January 19th, 2007 10:51 AM Author: Soul-stirring Property
Touro? Isn't that a town on Cape Cod?
I don't know why you are trying to guess the school I go to, I already admit that I go to a TTT (not a second tier or fourth tier), so your insults will not really prove anything
Date: January 19th, 2007 11:21 AM Author: Orchid Fragrant Digit Ratio Senate
If you got a V50 job from a true TTT you lucked out if you were only in the top 25% of your class. Even for most T2s the big firms are looking only in the top 10% of the class.
Date: January 19th, 2007 11:38 AM Author: Soul-stirring Property
While I admit that some of it was luck. The vast majority was hard work, and I am not talking about the work that I put in to do well at law school. I am talking about networking, contacting people, reapplying for jobs 3L that I was denied at the year before, mass-mailing, and finding out what firms have hired from my law school. This summer I met with a ton of alumns from my undergrad and law school who were biglaw grads, and I personally connected with some of them. As a consequence, they helped get my name to the top of the pile. It is not all that much luck, much more hard work. Most TTTs just don't put much effort into the job search and expect a job to fall out of the sky like they do for most T14ers.
Date: January 19th, 2007 5:58 PM Author: Soul-stirring Property
The T14ers will spend thier lives trying to prove that their as good as other T14ers and the TTTs that the work with. If you want to make partner or work your way up at DOJ or other Gov't agency then you will constantly be trying to prove that your better then everyone else. Sounds pretty stressful - it is - ever seen how many attorneys are bald by their mid-40s?
